Written by a couple from Pleasant Hill ... Came for the Vegan/Wellness Package (March 2011)

Let me tell you up front: I am biased when it comes to the Stanford Inn. My husband and I were married here over a year ago, and we just went back for our first anniversary. Simply put, the location is gorgeous. All rooms have ocean views, fireplaces and overlook the inn’s organic gardens. Better yet, breakfast is included with the price of the room. Everything is beautifully presented and delicious: French Toast, Garden Scramble, Frittata, Rancheros, Chilaquiles and much more. The scones are moist and fluffy. We bought two for the ride home, but they did not make it out of our hotel room. Note: They do offer some vegetarian items at breakfast such as cow’s milk, eggs, etc. I overheard a lady at a nearby table have a meltdown when she found out the half-and-half she had the day before was not vegan. I would probably have breakfast here every day if I could. http://www.ravensrestaurant.com/breakfast.html

Bike rentals are free to guests of the inn through Catch a Canoe, and there is an easy, paved trail just across the Big River. You can also rent canoes and kayaks. Tip: ask the front desk at the inn for a coupon.

Dinner is a memorable event with an ever-changing menu. I love walking through the gardens during the day, only to later see the same items show up on my plate. The atmosphere is a mix of both casual and elegant: diners in jeans and North Faces’ eating alongside those in suits and dresses. If you are lucky enough to be there during good weather, they open the windows to let in a refreshing breeze. The first night we shared the Grilled Oyster Mushrooms and Crab(less) Cakes, followed by Spinach and Butternut Squash Raviolis, and Eggplant Napoleon. On night two, we went for a mix of small plates and salads: more Grilled Oyster Mushrooms and Crab(less) Cakes (too good to not have again), Tamari-Glazed Maple Tofu (the wasabi emulsion is H-O-T), Caesar Salad and Wilted Spinach Salad. The Wilted Spinach Salad comes with Shitake Bacon, which tastes exactly how I remember crispy bacon tasting. Granted, it has been many, many years since I have had pork bacon, but the taste was uncanny. After the variety for dinner, we went simple with dessert and stuck with coconut milk ice cream, which they make in-house. The vanilla bean is amazing, especially alongside the maple. Yes, maple coconut milk ice cream. So freaking good!

If you are going: located right off Highway 1 on Comptche Ukiah Road in Mendocino.

Number of Prius’ in the parking lot: 15.

Pet friendly: yes.

Other amenities include: indoor swimming pool, yoga classes and spa treatments. Oh, and they do weddings!

The hotel was great; the room was great; the food was great; the pool was great; the service was great. I would stay here again.

We went to Mendocino in June for a nice weekend getaway. Our stay at the Stanford Inn was fantastic. It's the perfect place to relax. The indoor pool was amazing. The service exceptional. Breakfast at the restaurant superb!

My husband and I stayed at Stanford 2 years ago... The most beautiful vacation we ever had. After Stanford tried couple of other places and decided if go to Mendocino, then only to Stanford. Very cozy rooms with wood burn fireplaces. The featherbed is very soft and comfortable. The first night we we've hungry because the restaurant is vegetarians and we are not. But food was very delicious. The service is great and the people are very friendly. Most memorable was the in-door pool with sauna and z-cuzy. The rates were worth every penny. Great place to relax!

When crunchy granola types win big in a tech IPO, they stay at the Stanford Inn by the Sea at Mendocino. Stanford Inn is more a resort than a simple inn, and its expensive, but mostly worth every penny.

There is a 4-star all vegetarian restaurant, a secluded spa, and warmed pool with sauna and hot tub. You can walk through the large vegetable and flower garden that provides the ingredients for the 4-star menu (when you think steak - think portabella). All the rooms are richly furnished and built with very nice wood. There is a fire place in every room, and the maids actually "build" the fire place for you every day, so all you have to do is light a match. There is wireless internet in every room, and the best terry cloth bathrobes I've ever used (beats the Ritz, hands down - its soft in the inside, silky on the outside).

Pets are more than welcome. About half the visitors seem to bring their cats or dogs. There are dogs and cats roaming the grounds.

Since you are already plunking down at least 3 benjamins for a room here, plunk down one more, and stay in the "Barnyard Suite". It's a suite that is separate from the rest of the complex, and is half the first floor of the hotel owner's barnyard house. It's larger than most San Francisco apartments, and has a full kitchen and room for a whole family to stretch out.

Stanford Inn is a great value, and a very welcoming venue for a romantic getaway. Hosts and owners, Jeff and Joan Stanford, go out of their way to make you feel at home. Best of all, they welcome pets, and made our three dogs (see photo) very welcomed, including dog treats each night. The vegetarian/vegan restaurant is not only excellent, but the only one in the Mendocino area. My wife is vegan (I am not) and we both enjoyed it equally and ate there three nights in a row. The breakfasts are included and are first rate.

We've stayed here a couple of times with our poochies.
I'd describe it as luxurious in an earthy, unpretentious way.

What I liked best:
*Dog friendly!
*Free bikes.
*Free organic veggie breakfast every morning (always ask for a scone with your breakfast - they are the best I've ever tasted).
*Llamas, horses, dogs and cats on the property.
*It's quiet with unobtrusive staff and guests.
*In-room fireplaces which are freshly set each day.
*Gorgeous grounds.
*Lovely indoor swimming pool with sauna.

My BF and I wanted to drive up and take a tour of Mendocino and Humboldt so we decided to stay one night here and the next night in Humboldt. We loved this place...we walked in the room and the fireplace was all ready for us, all we had to do was light a match. The bed was really comfortable and the room had a great view of the garden down below. Breakfast the next morning was fantastic...I wish I could eat there every day! I can't say anything about dinner since we didn't get there in time the night before and were off to Humboldt the following afternoon but I'd like to go back and try it out.

My significant other and I recently took advantage of the winter special to celebrate his special birthday. I couldn't have chosen a more perfect place to spend two nights. we went on a recommendation and now we are raving about them. The package included dinners both nights and the food was absolutely wonderful--delicious, artfully presented and creative. The hosts, Jeff and Joan, were so welcoming and the staff treated us like family. The property is inviting, relaxing, with a huge indoor pool, and committed to environmental sustainability. This is a great find! We'll be back!

This place is amazing! My husband and I went there for our Valentines Day weekend and had a blast. We "rented" the FREE bikes from the hotel and rode all over town, including through the state park, which was absolutely beautiful. We hot tubed (late at night because it's open 24 hours), swam and ate, ate, ate. The food is phenomenal. I'm vegan, so I was in my glory, but my husband is not, and he could not get enough. We were even lucky enough to meet Dr. Andrew Weil who was staying in the resort!!! I didn't do any of the treatments this time around, but we will be going back in a few months with the kids this time and will do some then.

It's like adult sleepaway camp. We biked, kayaked, swam, hot tubbed, got massages, had great brunches, ate grown-on-site snacks in the afternoon, wandered their nursery and bought jade plants and veggies (they grow their vegetarian fare) and had cozy fires in our hotel room. All without leaving the property. What's not perfect about this place? The rooms are large, very comfortable, and perfectly rustic/cabin-y. You can bring your pet. I'm not a fan of all-inclusive big resorts. It may sound that way based on this review but it's fantastic location (walking distance to the Big River) makes everything convenient, relaxing and easy.

The property, main lodge, scenery, food - it was all great. Especially the dining - I'm not a vegetarian, but I could be after staying there - incredible.

This place is amazing! The property is larger than most typical B&Bs. However, the location, scenery, and setting are out of this world! I highly recommend staying here. The food was extraordinary as well!
